Sitting on a choice piece of lake frontage, this tiny log cabin is reminiscent of what a northern retreat must have been like before prime real estate became occupied by year-round mega-houses.

Bluff Road is a smooth strip of asphalt along the east side of Old Mission Peninsula north of Traverse City, Michigan. It is frequented by cyclists circumnavigating the beautiful arm of land that reaches into Grand Traverse Bay. Across Bluff Road is the master house, but the log cabin is a stand-alone dwelling with its own electric service and address.

Inside the cabin is a single bed, desk and chair, making it an ideal writer’s retreat. With four windows on three sides plus the screen door, there is ample ventilation. The deck provides additional living space during clement weather. The cabin may merely be decoration to the business of swimming and boating and might be a convenient changing room, but it plays this role with great style and up-north tradition.

The logs are painted pastel yellow, the gables are pastel blue, and the trim is pastel pink. The roof is covered with traditional cedar shakes. New screens cover the windows and door, and the house sits on what looks like a very new foundation of cement block construction. This old, tiny house is well loved and cared for.
