This exquisite garden house was found along a shaded lane in the Midwest. Even when setting out on an end-of-summer drive with the hope of spotting such a building, its discovery came as a happy surprise.

From the road it appeared almost too small to fit this site’s definition of a tiny house, “...a structure, which resembles our childhood drawings: simple, symmetrical, human sized, single purposed; bigger than a shed but smaller than a two-car garage..."

In fact, the owners describe it as a shed, but certain features elevate it above 'sheddom'. It has large, double-hung windows; there's an attached ladder leading to a loft big enough to play or nap in, and the loft has its own generous window. With its corregated, steel roof, the loft must be an exciting place during a rain storm.

When the children grow, the garden house might be their favorite retreat. Today a shed for garden tools, tomorrow a private place to do homework. The views out the back are of a wooded ravine.

The most frequent request by visitors to TinyHouses.net is for blueprints, material lists and pricing. But so many of these little gems start as a glimpse of an idea, saved from evaporation by a quick drawing on an envelope or a scrap of lumber. The owners were asked if any details could be provided, and this is what they said:

"We don't have plans. Michele designed it, and our contractor built it according to her sketch. It is meant as a play house and garden shed, and as you guessed, to give the children a place to play when they aren't 'helping' in the garden.

"The old doors and windows came out of our house when we renovated it. We have tried with our cottage and outbuildings to stick to what we think is a style belonging to the neighborhood.

"A pine wardrobe contains most gardening supplies, so the children are safe and the interior seems less like a shed. We will be planting more around it so next summer it will be much prettier."

Prettier? Butter to bacon.
