Katrina cottages are an emerging factor in the recovery effort following the 2005 hurricane season. Cottage Living magazine featured a story in their August 2006 issue describing some of these structures. The Christian Science Monitor did a story in October, 2006 about the cottages and the architect, Marianne Cusato. Instead of a FEMA trailer, and possibly for the same price, a substantial cottage under 400 square feet can be placed on a cleared lot while the owner repairs or replaces the damaged/destroyed home. The owner can live in the cottage while construction progresses on the main house. When repairs are complete, the Katrina cottage can be left in place and used for an office, a guest house or what-have-you.
