| Dear Housemaster: This house, on a lake in southwestern New Hampshire, was built about fifty years ago by my father and my sister who was 14 at the time. Over the years, it has been home to many students and other intrepid young adventurers who could deal with the isolation, lack of plumbing, and the small space (10 x 16 feet, with sleeping loft). Inspired by a Scottish song, my mother named it the "Wee Hoose". Last year, a cousin of mine said, "if that is the Wee Hoose, then the privy must be the Wee Wee Hoose!" That it will always be. About five years ago, we did some interior work to make it more attractive and livable as a weekend retreat. Though equipped with electricity and a telephone, there is still no plumbing, and the fun part is devising creative solutions to everyday tasks. I particularly enjoy seeing interior shots of the tiny houses. For me, a woodworker by instinct, the best part of having one of these is the fun of designing and building a pleasant and convenient interior within the obvious limitations. Ellen Chase | |
